Buy the Right Car, Save a Polar Bear

a number of recent news suggests that the polar ice caps are melting "faster than expected" and that this phenomenon can result in extinction of one of humanity's favorite animals, polar bears. Apparently polar bears should be able to migrate to the ice to fish for food, and that climate change is already beginning to break their ability to feed.

most reasonable scientists believe that this shift in the arctic climate due to global warming due to greenhouse effect, which is produced largely by automobile exhaust gases. While some scientists have speculated that it might be too late to reverse the trend of global warming, at least in the short term, others believe that we must do something drastic - now - to avoid environmental disaster

Most cars on the market today can burn gasoline-ethanol blends, which can reduce emissions. As a matter of fact, any gasoline vehicle can tolerate up to blend 10 percent ethanol, while many can use E85 ethanol - a blend of gasoline contains 85 percent ethanol. Dodge Caravan and Chrysler are just two of many current model cars [http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/progs/search_type.cgi?1/E85_GSLN] on the market that can burn E85.

One problem is that ethanol, particularly E85, is available everywhere. In addition, some critics have dismissed ethanol as impractical, arguing that ethanol requires more energy to create than it produces. As the global political and environmental issues heighten the demand for alternatives to petroleum-based fuels, the scientists will continue to work on more efficient ways to produce ethanol.

Diesel cars can run on biodiesel, a combination of regular diesel fuel and vegetable oil - based fuel, some cars are running on the D100, which is 100 percent vegetable oil. The two engaged in biodiesel, in turn, availability, and nitrogen oxide emissions, another culprit for the greenhouse effect. While biodiesel is promising, and has the added benefit of reducing dependence on foreign oil, a real effort to make biodiesel more popular cars will have to come with very strict emission standards that greatly reduce the content of nitrogen oxides.
