blood, bowels, vomiting, bedpans ... May some of you are already holding their stomachs! My apologies if this is the case. From here on out, I'll stick to the language of this article as gentle as I possibly can. Not all of us are accustomed to talking about "less than sociable bodily functions." However, if you're considering a career in it, it can be your first serious reality check. I have good news and bad news for you.
good news: Not all nurses working in bed ill patients. In fact, some nurses do not have contact with patients at all. As a professional nurse, not forever doomed to be knee-deep in. .. Well, I. .. you know ... "goo". Any variety!
The bad news: how to become a professional nurse, you will have to go through nursing school. To go through nursing school, you have to get over your "clinical" rotations. Clinical rotations in the hospital grounds. Night nursing. Goo. So it will happen for you.
More good news: Did you know that with repeated exposure to goo, you start to get used to it? And your reaction will become a lot less "attention-getting?" It's true! You do not start to get used to it.
If your goals are getting as far away from the goo into it as much as possible, then you simply plan for it. Look at the kinds of jobs you can do to not care for the sick people who make goo. What does it take to get that job? Are you passionate about doing the job? Then do what you must do it as fast as you can - goo all -. To get where you want to go
is a bit of bad news: There's something else you need to know. Most of the "goo-free" jobs require several years of experience in bedside care. Maybe not all but most.
is a bit of good news: Every nurse that I have ever known problems with some kind of goo. Nobody is completely immune! But you find out who can take it, and then help each other. Care in hospital is a team sport. Nursing school is even more of a team sport! Nursing students should watch out for each other and support one another all the way through. This is great practice for the real thing!
So what do you do if you tend to get crowded? Do not give up on your dream of becoming a nurse?
