In the past, television and printed news is measured by its ability to present the facts as clearly as possible. By suppressing the views of journalists, it is easier for the public to hear about events and form their own conclusions. Although this practice is definitely made for interesting dinner conversation, if a media company would try something like that today would not hold the viewer's attention for very long. Simply put, times have changed. People want to interact with the commentators and hear others' opinions as events unfold. Given the fact that people tend to listen more to those who agree with, it is not surprising that the bias is what helps to ensure that news sites are regular readers.
If you look at how people react to the top of the news, a combination of sensationalism and in-depth analysis has shown to be effective. With the recent popularity of blogs and blogging, readers initially began turning to these writers read and trending news and viewer comments. Different paradigm called by different people, and the rest is history. The popular news sites and print news organizations simply are caught in what attracts readers and began to include in their reporting.
While this state of events certainly has its good points, and a relatively recent change has its negative aspects. For one thing, since objectivity is not the type of value that is used for most web pages will attempt to trade on how quickly they can get the facts out. As a result, news outlets are often so busy trying to break the story first that is not always the proper source of its information, and journalists may be unethical in practice. What does it mean to "old school" readers is that it is much harder to get lean and fact-based reports. It would not matter much to you, but it's something that may or may not bother some people.
bias in the news can also be a good thing. There are some writers who have the talent to help you look at things from a different perspective. While pretty much anyone can string together a few words it takes more than that really communicate with other people. Adding internet and blogging to the equation has opened many opportunities for these talented individuals. Incorporating the human tendency to receive information and comment on it allows all types of individuals to experience the news together. Perhaps this explains the popularity bias. It helps reveal character.
